What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a highly trained professional who specializes in providing expert advice and support on breastfeeding and lactation issues.

IBCLCs are certified through a rigorous process that includes:

  1. Education: Completion of specific health science coursework related to lactation and breastfeeding, including eight college courses, CPR/First Aid, medical terminology and documentation, ethics and more.

  2. Clinical Experience: Accumulating a set number of clinical hours (300-1,000 depending on Pathway), working directly with breastfeeding families. I did Pathway 3, in which I was directly mentored by an IBCLC.

  3. Boards Examination: Passing a comprehensive four-hour board exam that tests knowledge and skills in lactation consulting.

IBCLCs are skilled in helping with a wide range of breastfeeding and chestfeeding challenges, such as:

  1. Latch Issues: Ensuring the baby latches onto the breast correctly.

  2. Milk Supply Concerns: Addressing concerns about milk production and availability.

  3. Breastfeeding Difficulties: Offering solutions to common problems like pain or engorgement.

  4. Feeding Plan: Supporting different feeding methods, including exclusive breastfeeding, pumping, and combination feeding.

  5. Education and Support: Providing guidance on breastfeeding techniques, nutrition, and overall infant care.

My goal is to help families achieve their feeding goals and ensure a positive and successful breastfeeding experience.
